Author bio
Laurien Berenson has spent much of her writing life in close company with dogs, and that helps explain why her fiction feels so at home around kennels, show rings, and opinionated pet people. She grew up in a family that loved and showed dogs. Her mother bred and exhibited Norwich terriers, and her grandmother showed wire fox terriers and Scottish terriers before later becoming a judge.
That world stuck.
After graduating from Vassar College with a degree in psychology, Berenson began writing full time. She first published category romances in the 1980s, using the name Laurien Blair on books like Sweet Temptation, Between the Covers, That Special Magic, and Taken by Storm. She later published more romances under her own name, including Come as You Are, Winner Take All, and Lucky In Love.
Before mystery took over, she also tried darker suspense. Night Cries turns a mother's terror into the center of the story, while Deep Cover follows a former reporter whose investigation puts her and her son at risk. Even in those books, you can see what Berenson likes to do: put ordinary women under pressure, then watch how resourceful they become.
In the early 1990s, she knew exactly what setting she wanted to explore next.
At the time, Berenson was breeding and showing Standard Poodles herself, and the dog show world gave her a ready-made mix of expertise, rivalry, gossip, and high stakes. A story she covered as a freelance writer about a valuable toy poodle that had been stolen helped spark the idea for A Pedigree To Die For, the first Melanie Travis mystery. That 1995 novel introduced readers to a schoolteacher, single mother, and reluctant sleuth who gets pulled into murder through her prickly Aunt Peg and a missing champion poodle.
Readers stayed for the dogs, but also for the people. The Melanie Travis books mix family life, local Connecticut settings, and solid cozy-mystery puzzles with a lot of behind-the-scenes dog knowledge. Over time the series grew from A Pedigree To Die For and Underdog to later entries like Jingle Bell Bark, Game of Dog Bones, and Die Another Dane. Berenson lets Melanie's life change as the series goes on, which gives the books a lived-in feeling that long-running mystery readers tend to love.
Berenson's success has been steady rather than flashy, which suits her work. She is a four-time winner of the Maxwell Award from the Dog Writers Association of America, won the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award, and has been nominated for the Agatha and Macavity awards. Her short story Sleeping Dogs Lie also earned award attention.
She did not stop with Melanie.
More recently, Berenson spun Melanie's memorable aunts into the Senior Sleuths books, beginning with Peg and Rose Solve a Murder. Those novels keep her fondness for sharp banter and close-knit communities, but shift the spotlight to two older women who bicker, investigate, and slowly learn to work together. It is a neat example of how Berenson keeps finding new corners of the same fictional world.
These days she lives with her husband on a farm in Kentucky, surrounded by dogs and horses. That feels exactly right. Her books have always suggested a writer who knows the small routines of animal people, the humor of family friction, and the way a cozy mystery can be both comforting and genuinely suspenseful at the same time.
