The Seer series is Rick Murcer's move away from police procedurals and into epic fantasy. Its opening novel, Seer, is also known as Seer: The Gift, and it begins with a familiar life broken open by an impossible event.

Gabe Stark loves his quiet life in North Haven, a small town in Northern Michigan. Then a terrible accident leaves him critically injured and in a coma. When Gabe wakes twelve days later, he is no longer simply recovering from trauma. He has gained an unexpected ability, a gift he did not ask for and does not fully welcome.

Nothing about going home is simple after that.

The story pairs Gabe's confusion with signs that the change in him is part of something much larger. A mysterious man in a white suit carries a golden sword, and Gabe is pushed toward places that feel more like dreams or movies than ordinary life. The questions build quickly: what has happened to him, what can his new gift do, and why has he become involved in a struggle that reaches beyond his small town?

Murcer uses the ordinary setting of northern Michigan as a starting point, which helps the fantasy elements feel disruptive rather than distant. Gabe is not introduced as a person searching for a magical world. He is someone whose life is abruptly remade by survival, recovery, and an ability that carries its own risks. That creates a coming-into-power story with the emotional pressure of a man trying to understand what he has become.

The danger is much bigger than Gabe.

As the story unfolds, Gabe's gift takes him toward a confrontation with an evil force bent on plunging Earth into darkness. The series therefore trades crime scenes and criminal profiling for a broader conflict between an unexpected hero and a threat with world-level stakes. Even so, the heart of the setup remains personal: Gabe must decide how to live with a power he never wanted.

Readers should expect a change of pace from Murcer's Manny Williams and Ellen Harper books. Seer is built around supernatural ability, mystery, a strange guide, travel beyond normal experience, and the possibility that one person's transformation can affect everyone else. The tone is more openly fantastical, but the pressure comes from the same kind of question found throughout Murcer's work: what does a person do when danger gives them no safe way to walk away?

Seer is the first book in the planned trilogy, so it is the clear place to begin.
