Author bio
Rick Murcer is a Michigan-based writer of crime thrillers, police procedurals, short fiction, fantasy, and faith-centered suspense. His best-known books follow Manny Williams, a detective whose cases grow from local investigations into FBI work with dangerous killers.
Murcer came to fiction writing later than many novelists. He had already published his first short story, Herb's Home Run, in Writer's Journal in 2002, but a career setback gave writing a new urgency. After losing his executive job during the economic downturn of 2008, he sent out more than 600 resumes without finding another position.
So he decided to try making it as a writer. It was a practical leap, but also a personal one.
He'd been hooked by storytelling from the start.
His first novel, Caribbean Moon, introduced Lansing detective Manny Williams and began the series that became the center of his bibliography. Manny is a workaholic investigator, and the early books place him in cases that move between Michigan, the Caribbean, cruise ships, and later much farther afield. Murcer followed quickly with Deceitful Moon and Emerald Moon, then expanded Manny's world through the Rain and Fire novels.
The Manny books are built for readers who like an active case, a team of investigators, and clues that lead into stranger territory. Manny's longtime partner Sophie Lee is an important part of that world, bringing experience and sharp banter to cases that often put the team under real pressure. Later stories move Manny into FBI work and give the series a broader map, from Puerto Rico and North Carolina to Las Vegas, Mexico, Miami, and New Orleans.
Murcer hasn't stayed in one lane. Drop Dead Perfect starts the Ellen Harper stories, with a Chicago forensic expert at the center of a serial-killer investigation. Seer is his turn toward epic fantasy, while Between Skies follows widowed investigator Kate Bennett through a cold case, family upheaval, and questions of faith.
He has also written shorter pieces, including Capital Murder, Manny Blue and Black Max, and the collection Classic Shorts: The Lighthouse & Herb's Home Run. Those stories give him room to revisit familiar investigators or tell a tighter mystery without the length of a full novel.
Murcer graduated from Michigan State University. He has written about returning to Michigan after a period in Florida so he and his wife could be closer to their grown children and grandchildren. His dogs have also made their way into his author story, especially Max, the blind black Labrador he called his writing dog, and the later rescue dogs Beaux and Braxton.
His career began with a hard reset and a decision to keep going. That persistence shows up in the books too, where investigators, families, and survivors have to keep moving when the easy answer is nowhere in sight.
