Author bio

Scott William Carter was born in Minnesota and grew up in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, a region that later became central to much of his fiction. The rainy coast, small towns, forests, and uneasy sense of distance in Oregon show up again and again in his mysteries and fantasies.

He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1994 with a degree in English. Before writing became his main focus, Carter worked a varied set of jobs, including ski instructor, bookstore owner, computer-training manager, college writing instructor, instructional designer, and academic technologist.

It’s the sort of résumé that gives a writer plenty of people to watch and plenty of strange situations to file away.

Carter began by publishing short fiction in science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and literary magazines. That wide start still shows in his books. He moves comfortably from a hard-edged private-eye case to a ghost story, a middle-grade fantasy, or a funny, messy tale about teenagers making bad choices.

His first novel, The Last Great Getaway of the Water Balloon Boys, follows two teenage boys on a reckless road trip in a stolen Mustang. The book won an Oregon Book Award for Young Adult Literature. It has the quick pace of an adventure, but it also cares about friendship, family trouble, and the choices that keep following people long after the ride is over.

Then came the mysteries. In the Garrison Gage books, a damaged, stubborn private investigator leaves New York for the Oregon coast after his wife’s murder, only to find that quiet seaside towns come with plenty of secrets. The Gray and Guilty Sea starts that series, while books such as A Shroud of Tattered Sails and A Kiss of Sand and Sorrow keep Gage working cases shaped by missing people, old grudges, and the weather-beaten town of Barnacle Bluffs.

Carter also takes mystery in stranger directions. Ghost Detective introduces Myron Vale, a Portland investigator who survives a shooting with a bullet lodged in his brain and wakes able to see ghosts. The Karen Pantelli novels, beginning with Throwaway Jane, follow a former FBI agent who tries to drift through life without caring too much, then keeps finding people she can’t leave behind.

For younger readers, Carter has written stories that are adventurous, odd, and sometimes a little dark. Wooden Bones imagines what happens after Pinocchio becomes a real boy, when Pino discovers he can bring wooden puppets to life. The Lost Lands of Rymadoon books, including Drawing a Dark Way and A Tale of Two Giants, head into a fantasy world of dragons, ruins, giants, and dangerous journeys.

He also writes and draws the comic strip Run of the House, about house pets getting up to their own business when their people are away.

Carter lives in Salem, Oregon, with his family, and he still makes regular trips to the Oregon coast. That connection is easy to spot in his work. Even when the story takes readers to another world, there is often a road, a shoreline, or a small community where somebody has to decide whether to walk away or step in and help.
