The Romantics shifts to London and pairs American bodyguard Joe Allario with Lady Veronica Douglas. Ronnie is determined to prove that her father's death was murder, not an accident. Joe has been sent to protect her, a job he initially dismisses as simple. It is not simple for long. Veronica's search puts her in real danger, and Joe has to face his own fears as their professional arrangement becomes personal.

The series has a playful tone, but it does not treat the stakes as a joke. Assassins, murder investigations, terrorism, and threats to public figures give the stories momentum. The humor comes from clashing personalities, awkward assignments, and people who are very good at their jobs but less skilled at admitting they care.

The central couples differ from book to book, and the familiar exchange-program setup gives the series continuity.
