Series background & context

Portsmouth Whalers Hockey Romance is Stephanie Queen's hockey rom-com series set around an expansion team in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The books feature hockey players, a coach, agents, grandmothers with opinions, and people whose careful plans tend to collapse the moment romance gets involved.

The series starts with The Big Puck. A young coach is trying to make a career comeback after taking charge of the Portsmouth Whalers, but his half-brother's death leaves him responsible for an infant niece and a pile of debt. He needs help quickly. A player's sister offers to step in, creating a grumpy coach and sunshine-style romance with a very small, very demanding third party in the middle.

Hockey problems are one thing. Life problems are another.

The One Timer follows a player who shares one unforgettable night with a woman who disappears before morning, only to find her again when he goes home for Christmas. Their reunion comes with misunderstandings and family connections that make a simple second meeting impossible. The holiday setting gives the story a softer edge, but the couple still has to work through why she left.

The later books continue with different Whalers and familiar romance setups. Two Pucks brings a second-chance, single-dad angle. Tricky Puck uses a fake fiancée arrangement shaped by a matchmaking grandmother who wants to see her grandson settled. Lucky Puck moves to a Las Vegas NHL All-Star weekend, where rookie phenom Brody lands in trouble and turns to his tough sports agent, Bianca, for help. A fake marriage makes their professional relationship much harder to keep professional.

The team itself connects the stories, but the tone is lighter than a hard-edged sports drama. Players may deal with contracts, rookie mistakes, public relations disasters, and the pressure to perform, yet the books make room for babies, dogs, Christmas visits, meddling relatives, and situations that are funny because they are just believable enough.

The heroes are not always polished. Some are young stars with too much attention, some are trying to restart a career, and some are simply not prepared for the family duties dropped into their lives. Their partners tend to be capable women who have their own work and priorities, whether that means caring for a child, working in health care, or representing an athlete as an agent.

Start with The Big Puck to meet the Whalers world and its mix of hockey, family upheaval, and reluctant romance. Reading in order lets the team grow around the central couples, even though each book has its own relationship and happily-ever-after focus.
