Scorched Earth sits in familiar Boyd Craven territory, but it approaches collapse from a slightly different angle. Good Fences begins with Brian Cartwright, a widowed farmer who is already locked in a petty war with an HOA, a former boss, and the new neighborhood pressing in around his land. Then an EMP changes the scale of the conflict. The people who mocked his way of life suddenly have to decide whether they can live without it.

That setup is smart because the series is not really about the end of the world in the abstract. It is about where farms, subdivisions, pride, and old resentment meet. The fence line matters. Property disputes matter. The everyday annoyances that looked small before the blackout become loaded once food, space, and security are on the line.

People change under that kind of pressure.

The second book, Northern Lights, carries the broader collapse forward through a group of friends who are better prepared than most. That gives the series a slightly wider lens while keeping the same grounded tone. Craven stays interested in what preparation can do, but also in its limits. Knowing what might happen is not the same as controlling it once fear spreads.

This is a rural survival series, but it is not isolated cabin fiction. Neighbors are always part of the problem and part of the answer. Brian and the others have to balance self-protection with the reality that nobody builds a lasting future entirely alone. That tension, more than any single villain, keeps the books moving.
