Series background & context

Sci-Fi Sizzlers is a little different from Falconer's bigger sagas. This is not one long continuous storyline with a fixed cast and a strict reading order. It is a shelf of standalone stories, usually short, each built around one sharp speculative hook. That makes the series easy to dip into. You can read them in any order and pick a premise that suits your mood.

The range is part of the fun. Some stories stay close to home and twist everyday technology just far enough to become unsettling, like Pamela 2.0, Happy, Inc., Funscreen, and Oracle. Others head outward into space or engineered environments, as in Wanderlust, Sunset Stays, Seedling, and Saturn For Sale. A few tilt toward creepy mystery or dark comedy, like Pumpkin Splice, When Santa Slays, and Too Good To Be True. Across all of them, Falconer likes to start with a clean premise and then ask the awkward next question.

That variety is the appeal.

Even though the stories change setting and cast from book to book, there is a recognizable house style. Falconer usually begins with a person who thinks they understand the rules, a tech product, a job, a trip, a trial, a promotion, then lets the cracks appear. The big idea matters, but the human angle matters first. A jaded influencer at a perfect resort, grieving parents who distrust the official story of a school space mission, a skeptical observer confronting a flashy time-travel company, these are all very different setups, but they are driven by the same instinct for character-level stakes.

The later entries keep expanding what that short format can do. Empty Nesters and Seedling lean into emotional and first-contact ideas. A Savage In The Future and Yester Year play with time in different ways. Bound For Glory and Whence They Came bring in resistance and invasion. Because the stories are compact, Falconer can take bigger swings with tone without losing momentum.

That also makes this series a good way to sample the full spread of his interests. You see the same themes that run through his longer work, hidden agendas, consumer tech, surveillance, alien contact, public manipulation, ordinary people trapped inside large systems, but in a quicker, punchier form. If the longer sagas are where he stretches out, Sci-Fi Sizzlers is where he gets to turn one bright idea into a tight, satisfying read.

So if you are looking for a Falconer series that does not demand a huge commitment up front, this is the easiest place to browse. Pick the premise that grabs you, read it, and then pick a completely different one next time. The stories are linked more by mood and curiosity than by continuity, and that is exactly why the series works.
