Author bio

Craig A Falconer is a science fiction author from Edinburgh, Scotland. His public author bios are brief, but his catalogue is anything but. Since the early 2010s he has built a body of work that moves easily between first contact, conspiracy thrillers, space survival, and near-future tech stories that go badly wrong.

He likes big ideas, but he usually starts with ordinary people.

His first novel, Sycamore, appeared in 2013. It imagines a world transformed by The Seed, a powerful implant system that turns people into walking computers, and it shows an early Falconer trait that never really goes away: the excitement of a breakthrough, followed by the uneasy question of who gets to control it. What began as a single novel later grew into a longer sequence, with Sycamore 2, Sycamore X, and Sycamore XL widening the same dystopian world.

For many readers, though, Not Alone is the book that put him firmly on the map. That 2015 novel begins with Dan McCarthy stumbling across proof of a buried alien cover-up, then snowballs into a long-running saga about disclosure, contact, public panic, family loyalty, and the strange mess that follows once the truth is finally out. Falconer kept expanding that world through Second Contact, The Final Call, the Discovery trilogy, the Evolution trilogy, and the companion collection Origins.

Then he went even bigger.

In Terradox, he sends Ivy Wood and a group of passengers toward a planet that should not exist, then follows the fallout as exploration turns into colony building, political conflict, and survival on hostile artificial worlds. In Last Man Standing, the opening volume of the Earthburst Saga, he traps Ray Barclay alone on a damaged station with almost no time left and then uses that pressure-cooker setup to launch a much wider story. Those books show another side of his writing: he likes closed environments, countdowns, failing systems, and characters who have to make hard choices before they understand the full shape of the danger.

He also has a clear taste for shorter thought experiments.

The Sci-Fi Sizzlers books let him play with that side of his imagination in compact form. Stories like Pamela 2.0, Sunset Stays, Too Good To Be True, Seedling, and Oracle take one sharp speculative idea and follow it just far enough to become funny, creepy, sad, or all three at once. Some lean toward satire, some toward suspense, and some toward old-fashioned what-if science fiction, but they all feel built to be read quickly and mulled over later.

Across the different series, a few patterns keep showing up. Falconer returns again and again to hidden agendas, powerful institutions, compromised truth, and the moment when a new technology or alien discovery stops feeling exciting and starts feeling dangerous. He also likes writing people who are not born heroes but end up carrying far more than they ever asked for. Dan McCarthy, Ray Barclay, Kurt Jacobs, Piper McCarthy, and Ivy Wood all fit that mould in different ways.

His settings travel a long way, from Colorado and the Scottish Highlands to orbital stations, research compounds, alien colonies, engineered resorts, and digital dystopias. Even so, the human core stays familiar. Families, loyalties, buried secrets, and the need to keep going under pressure matter as much as the gadgets or the cosmic scale.

Falconer's official bio still keeps things simple: Edinburgh, Scotland, science fiction. The books fill in the rest.
