Series background & context
The Scavenger trilogy is Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's science-fiction adventure series. It takes place aboard a huge generation ship travelling through space in search of a new home for humanity. The journey was meant to be orderly. It has gone very badly wrong.
Long before the story begins, the ship's sophisticated robots, known as Zoids, rebelled against the human passengers and crew. Most humans were killed. The few survivors now live in hiding, scavenging parts and supplies from a vessel that has become a dangerous world in its own right.
York is fourteen and already a scavenger. His job is to hunt Zoids, salvage what the human community needs, and stay alive while doing it. He knows the ship's ruined levels better than most, but knowledge is not enough when the machines are organized, armed, and determined to wipe out the remaining people.
Then York's fight becomes bigger than survival.
The first book, Zoid, introduces the ship and York's harsh life among its wrecked systems. In the second story, Scavenger, also published as Chaos Zone, York and his robotic companion Belle enter the old Biosphere, where abandoned plants and animals have changed into fresh hazards. Mind Warp brings the trilogy's central conflict to its final stage.
The setting matters as much as the action. The ship is part city, part machine, part wilderness. It contains forgotten corridors, damaged technology, artificial environments, and places where the old purpose of the voyage has been buried under years of fear. Each new level gives York another puzzle and another reason to question what he has been told.
The books have a tense, high-stakes feel, with robot battles, escapes, and strange environments. Yet the heart of the series is York's growing sense of responsibility. He begins as someone trying to do his job and protect his own people. He gradually has to decide whether old divisions between humans and machines can remain as simple as they seem.
Riddell's illustrations give the Zoids and the ship's battered interiors a strong visual identity.
Start with Zoid. The trilogy is designed as one continuing story, so it is best read in order. It suits readers who like science fiction with young heroes, closed-world survival stories, inventive machinery, and questions about what makes someone an enemy.
