Author bio
Paul Stewart was born in London in June 1955. His family first lived in Muswell Hill in North London, then moved to Morden in the south of the city, where he went to school. English was his favorite subject. Mathematics, by his own account, was not.
He was a reader early on, drawn to strange worlds, imaginative maps, science fiction, and books that made ordinary rules feel optional. As a child, he started a story series about a snail. The impulse to make up worlds clearly stuck.
After school, Stewart travelled, including time in Greece, where he took on jobs such as picking fruit and whitewashing hotels. He later studied English, creative writing, and religious education at Lancaster University from 1974 to 1977. In 1978, he went on to study creative writing at the University of East Anglia.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Stewart taught English in Germany and Sri Lanka. Those years of travelling, teaching, and observing unfamiliar places gave him plenty to draw on. His stories often put young people into settings where the rules are odd, the adults are unreliable, and survival depends on curiosity, nerve, and a good friend.
His first published novel, The Thought Domain, arrived in 1988. It was followed by books including The Weather Witch, Adam's Ark, and The Wakening. Stewart wrote ghost stories, science fiction, school stories, football adventures, and comic fantasy, moving easily between eerie danger and sillier ideas.
Then came a key partnership. Stewart met illustrator Chris Riddell in the early 1990s, when their children attended the same school. Riddell had drawings that needed stories, and Stewart was looking for an illustrator. Their collaboration became a true shared process, with ideas, characters, plots, and pictures shaping one another.
Their best-known work is The Edge Chronicles, which began with Beyond the Deepwoods in 1998. The books follow different generations of heroes across the Edge, a dangerous fantasy world of sky ships, floating cities, strange creatures, forests, mines, and storms. Readers tend to come for the big adventures and detailed illustrations, then stay for the history connecting the separate stories.
Stewart and Riddell also created the funny Muddle Earth books, the eerie Barnaby Grimes mysteries, the imaginative Far-Flung Adventures, and the younger Blobheads stories. Later projects such as Wyrmeweald and Scavenger show the same interest in young characters facing worlds that are exciting, frightening, and a little bit off-kilter.
His books make room for jokes, monsters, maps, and genuine peril.
Across a long career, Stewart has kept returning to one useful question: what happens when a child is dropped into a place too strange and too dangerous to understand at first? The answer is usually an adventure with plenty of weird corners to explore.
