Series background & context

At the center of the Scarlett Bernard books is a wonderfully inconvenient power. Scarlett is a null, which means magic fails around her. Vampires and werewolves lose their supernatural edge. Witches cannot cast. In Melissa F Olson's hidden Old World, that makes Scarlett valuable to everyone and fully trusted by no one. She earns her living in Los Angeles cleaning supernatural crime scenes before ordinary humans, especially the LAPD, can see what really happened.

It is a practical, grubby job, and that practical streak shapes the whole series.

Dead Spots starts when that careful arrangement breaks down and homicide detective Jesse Cruz gets too close to the truth. From there, the books work as both urban fantasy and crime story. Scarlett is not a chosen one learning to throw fireballs. She is a working woman trying to stay alive while vampire bosses, werewolf packs, witches, and police investigations all pull at her from different directions.

Los Angeles matters here. Olson uses the city's sprawl, nightlife, and layered power structures to make the supernatural feel hidden in plain sight. The Old World runs on rules, favors, and territory. Scarlett sits right at the fault line between human life and supernatural secrecy, so every murder scene, cover-up, or missing person case threatens to become a much bigger political problem.

Then the personal stuff starts to hit just as hard as the monsters.

Across Trail of Dead and Hunter's Trail, Scarlett is forced to deal with her past, her former mentor Olivia, and the fallout of her bond with Eli, a werewolf whose fate changes the balance of power in LA. Jesse keeps pushing her toward honesty. Eli pulls at a different part of her life. Meanwhile the city gets more dangerous, and Scarlett can no longer pretend she is just the cleaner who comes in after the real story is over.

That is what gives these books their hook. They have the speed and tension of paranormal thrillers, but the emotional center is about responsibility. What do you owe your friends, your city, and the people who do not even know your world exists? Scarlett is sarcastic, stubborn, and very good at compartmentalizing, so watching those walls crack is a big part of the fun. If you like urban fantasy that leans on mystery, power politics, and a heroine who wins by staying sharp instead of by being the strongest creature in the room, this is a strong place to start.
