Series background & context

Boundary Magic begins with grief, not wonder. Allison Lex Luther is a former Army sergeant in Boulder, still knocked sideways by the murder of her twin sister, Sam. She is trying to keep her niece Charlie safe when Boundary Crossed reveals two life-changing facts at once: Charlie is a null, and Lex herself is a boundary witch, someone whose power sits right on the line between life and death.

That line matters.

Lex can see ghosts, influence minds, and touch kinds of magic most people in the Old World would rather leave alone. Those abilities make her valuable, but they also make other witches, vampires, and werewolves nervous. Much of the series is about Lex learning the rules of a hidden society while deciding how much of herself she is willing to hand over to it. She is never just studying magic for fun. She is studying it because her family could die if she gets it wrong.

Boulder gives these books a different feel from the Los Angeles based Scarlett Bernard novels. The tone is a little rougher, a little lonelier, and often more haunted. Lex is a veteran with a blunt sense of humor, rescue animals, and very little patience for supernatural posturing. That makes her a great guide to this corner of the Old World. She notices power, but she also notices groceries, exhaustion, grief, and who is actually showing up when things go bad.

As the books move through Boundary Lines and Boundary Born, Lex's world gets wider. She becomes entangled with Colorado's cardinal vampire, Maven, works closely with the fixer Quinn, and builds ties with witches like Simon and Lily. The mysteries get bigger, but the heart of the series stays steady: Charlie's safety, Sam's lingering absence, and Lex's uneasy place inside a community that fears both nulls and death magic.

Boundary magic is never clean.

That idea drives the later books too. Boundary Broken and Boundary Haunted push Lex into wider conflicts involving werewolves, ghosts, regional politics, and old grudges that do not stay buried. By the time you reach Old World War, Lex is no longer just protecting one child and one city. She is one of the people holding a much larger world together, whether she asked for that job or not. If you like urban fantasy with solid mystery plotting, capable but bruised heroines, and magic that comes with a real moral cost, this is a very good lane.
