Series background & context
Scale & Sea, co-written by James T Callum and K.H. Sohmer, starts with a portal fantasy setup and then keeps piling on stranger, bigger ideas. The lead is Deklin Faust, a fourth-year magi from Earth who expects a break and instead gets stranded on a dangerous Worldshard. From there the series mixes LitRPG progression, cultivation-style growth, tower climbing, and guild politics.
Deklin lands in a place where Spire Climbers compete for status and Cultivators bind magical Aspects to strengthen their spirits. He is transformed into a dragonblood, branded an outlaw, and cut off from the easy path upward. That matters because this world does not forgive people who step outside the approved order. Advancement is power, status, and survival all at once.
Deklin is not trying to be safe.
What makes the series fun is that it leans into outsider energy. Deklin gathers other exiles, oddballs, and dangerous allies rather than slotting neatly into existing institutions. In Sovereign Soul the emphasis is on learning the rules and surviving them. By Gloamtide Guild, the story has shifted toward city struggles, forgotten powers, and the creation of a guild that can challenge Noble Guilds and dig up secrets buried in the Mistfolk past.
That progression gives the books a strong antihero flavor. Deklin is nudged toward Dark Lord territory, but the appeal is not simple villain swagger. It is watching someone marked as expendable decide to push back hard enough that the whole political and magical structure has to notice. The series likes ambition, risk, and the moment when survival turns into long-term plans that are maybe a little too large for anyone else's comfort.
The humor helps.
For all the darkness in the premise, Scale & Sea also makes room for banter, weird companions, and the messy business of building something with people who do not quite belong anywhere else. The tone can swing from sword-and-sorcery danger to irreverent party dynamics without feeling like two different books fighting each other. If you want progression fantasy that mixes forbidden magic, guild building, cultivation, and a lead who keeps edging closer to conquest, this is the series to start with. It is big on systems, but it never forgets that power is most interesting when it changes the people using it.
