Author bio
James T Callum writes the kind of fantasy that clearly comes from a lifetime of reading, gaming, and pulling apart how imaginary worlds work. He comes from Florida, later moved steadily west, and eventually settled in Washington, where the trees and mountains are a long way from the swamps he jokes about in his bio. He has said that reading A Wizard of Earthsea early on hooked him for good.
Games were the other half of the story.
Callum has talked about growing up on tabletop RPGs, D&D sessions, trading cards, consoles, and PC games, with everything from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy to Illusion of Gaia and even River City Ransom feeding his imagination. When he discovered LitRPG, he found the lane that let him combine systems, story, and the pleasure of watching characters earn every scrap of power.
Before publishing steadily, he worked as an EMT, and during the early stretch of his writing career he was still balancing long shifts with chapters, deadlines, and note-taking on breaks. In an interview, he described himself as data-driven, someone who tracks word counts, work hours, and writing time. That mix of grind and mechanics-minded curiosity shows up all over his fiction.
His debut novel, Sylvie Asleton and the Shrike's Curse, arrived in 2018 and leaned into darker urban fantasy and magical-school mystery. Not long after, he launched the much larger Beastborne Chronicles with Mark of the Founder, then followed it with Exiled Lands and Mist Wardens. Those books helped define his style: big progression systems, harsh worlds, crafting, party dynamics, and a hero who has to build a home while trying not to lose himself.
He did not stay in one corner of the genre. In Rewind and Futures Grave, the Pyresouls Apocalypse books, Callum shifts into a gloomier mode, mixing time travel, apocalypse stakes, and game logic with a darker, more desperate mood. Readers who like cosmic horror touches, boss-fight tension, and worlds that feel one bad decision from collapse tend to find a lot to like there.
He also likes building series that feel different from one another, even when they share his love of progression and systems.
That range shows up especially in his collaborations with K.H. Sohmer. Sovereign Soul and the later Scale & Sea books push toward cultivation, tower climbing, guild politics, and a lead character flirting with Dark Lord territory. Voidknight Ascension opens with the end of the world and expands into floating islands, survival, and base building. Then Shrubley, the Monster Adventurer swings the other way, giving readers a cheerfully determined shrub monster trying to prove that heroes do not have to be human.
Across all of it, Callum returns to a few favorite ideas. Power usually comes with a cost. Friends, guilds, and found families matter. Monsters are rarely just monsters. And even in very game-heavy worlds, the real question is often whether a person can make a place worth protecting.
These days he has described life among Washington's mountains and forests, splitting his time between writing, hiking local trails, and playing what he freely calls an unhealthy amount of video games. That sounds about right for an author whose books so often feel like a meeting point between epic fantasy, tabletop energy, and the joy of leveling up.
