Saralyn Richard grew up in Galveston, Texas, where the beach, the storms, and the island's mix of people gave her plenty to notice. She has said she always wanted to write, and that early pull toward story never really left.

By the time she was 15, Richard was already researching the 1900 Galveston storm in library stacks and imagining a novel of her own. She spent years gathering notes and later began a manuscript, but life first carried her into education. That winding path turned out to be good training for a novelist who pays close attention to people under pressure.

The scenic route helped.

Before becoming a full-time author, Richard worked as a teacher, administrator, and school improvement consultant, mostly in urban high schools. She has also taught and judged creative writing and literature. In 2013, she made the shift into publishing with Naughty Nana, a picture book inspired by the real sheepdog puppy whose antics gave her both a story and a public introduction to life as an author. She has said that keeping track of Nana's mischief is what eventually gave her the book.

Her mystery career started soon after. Murder in the One Percent introduced Detective Oliver Parrott and opened the door to Richard's Brandywine Valley stories about wealth, class, and murder hiding behind polished surfaces. That series continued with A Palette for Love and Murder, Crystal Blue Murder, and Murder Outside the Box, books that mix traditional clue-solving with police procedure and the personal strains that follow Parrott home. Parrott, a former college football player with a strong moral compass, is a good example of the kind of lead Richard likes, capable, decent, and still very human.

She doesn't stay in one setting.

Richard also wrote A Murder of Principal, a standalone mystery set inside a troubled urban high school, where her years in education clearly inform the details. Later she turned to the Texas Gulf Coast for Bad Blood Sisters and Mrs. Oliver's Twist, following Quinn McFarland, a young woman working in her family's funeral home while trying to reclaim a life that has gone off course. Richard has said Quinn originally wanted to work in medicine on the living side of things, which gives those books an extra layer of longing and momentum.

Across all these stories, Richard tends to focus on ordinary human vulnerabilities rather than larger-than-life heroes. Money, status, family loyalty, grief, ambition, and buried resentment keep showing up in different forms. Readers who like strong settings usually find a lot to enjoy too, from Brandywine mansions and art circles to Midwestern school hallways and the close, salty atmosphere of Galveston. Several of her mystery novels have also picked up awards and contest honors, but the more revealing fact is how steady her interests are from book to book.

Richard lives in Galveston and stays active with readers through book clubs, events, and the wider mystery community. She remains involved with major mystery and thriller organizations, and she keeps writing new work while returning, again and again, to the places and questions that first shaped her.
