Author bio
Sarah Zettel was born in Sacramento, California, and spent much of her childhood in Michigan. Books were part of the household furniture, and fairy tales made an early, lasting impression, especially the older versions that were stranger and rougher than their polished retellings.
She knew early that she wanted to write.
At the University of Michigan, Zettel built a communications degree around as many writing classes as she could find. Before novels took over, she wrote short fiction and worked as a technical writer, experience that helped give her science fiction a practical feel. Her first novel, Reclamation, arrived in 1996 and won the Locus Award for Best First Novel.
Then came Fool's War, a space adventure centered on a starship, its crew, and an emerging intelligence in the ship's computer. It became a New York Times Notable Book. Zettel's early science fiction, including Playing God, The Quiet Invasion, and Kingdom of Cages, often puts ordinary people inside systems that are much bigger than they are, from fragile colonies to alien politics and questions about who controls the future.
She doesn't stay in one genre for long.
Her fantasy work ranges from the cross-world magic and court conflict of the Isavalta books to the Arthurian romances of The Paths to Camelot. In the young adult American Fairy trilogy, Callie LeRoux discovers that she is half fairy while moving through a 1930s America shaped by the Dust Bowl, Hollywood, jazz, and racial divides. The books blend historical detail with old-fashioned fairy-tale danger.
Zettel also writes mysteries, romance, and suspense under several names. As Darcie Wilde, she created the Regency-set Rosalind Thorne mysteries and later the Young Queen Victoria mysteries. As Delia James, she wrote paranormal cozy mysteries about a witch, a cat, and a New Hampshire town. Her Jennifer Hawkins name is behind the tea-shop mysteries featuring Emma Reed and her talkative corgi, Oliver. She has also written Regency romance as Marissa Day and science fiction as C. L. Anderson.
The different names make sense once you see the range. A Zettel story may involve an AI, a spell, a palace secret, a struggling restaurant for vampires, or a mother protecting her daughter. Across those settings, she returns to capable women, close relationships, complicated families, and people trying to make decent choices under pressure.
Her later suspense novels, The Other Sister and A Mother's Lie, bring that interest in family history and hidden danger into contemporary settings. They are grounded stories, but the tension still comes from secrets, shifting loyalties, and characters who discover that the past has not stayed put.
Zettel lives and writes in Michigan with her husband and son. She has also made room in her life for hiking, cooking, stitching, old books, and enough embroidery floss to admit that hobbies can get a little out of hand.
