Author bio
Sarah Glenn Marsh has been making up words and worlds since childhood, when her father handed her a copy of The Hobbit and told her it would change her life. It did. Fantasy became a lasting interest, and it still sits at the center of much of her work, whether she is writing for teens, children, or adult romance readers.
Before becoming a full-time author, Marsh earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Mary Washington. She then chose to pursue writing, bringing an educator’s feel for young readers and clear storytelling to books that range from ghost stories to historical picture-book biographies.
Her 2016 debut, Fear the Drowning Deep, heads to the Isle of Man in 1913, where a teen girl faces old fears, village secrets, and something dangerous beneath the water. Its companion novel, Dread the Harvest Moon, returns to the island with a fairy-world quest, family pressure, and a young woman learning to make room for her own wants.
Then came the dead.
In the Reign of the Fallen duology, Marsh built Karthia, a kingdom where necromancers raise dead nobles and must keep them carefully shrouded. Reign of the Fallen follows Odessa as a wave of monstrous Shades points to a plot against the kingdom, while Song of the Dead takes Odessa beyond Karthia and back into a fight over what the living and the dead owe one another. The books mix dark magic, grief, romance, action, and big political trouble.
Marsh also writes creepy contemporary stories. In The Girls Are Never Gone, a teenage podcaster who publicly investigates hauntings gets drawn into the past of a troubled estate and the danger gathering around its lake. It is a ghost mystery, but it also makes room for friendship, first love, skepticism, and the hard work of facing what is real.
Her picture books show another side of her range. The Bug Girl introduces young readers to scientist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian. Alice Across America follows Alice Ramsey’s 1909 cross-country drive, while Anna Strong looks at the coded signals used by an American Revolution spy. In Dragon Bones, fossil hunter Mary Anning keeps searching the cliffs near her home even when the adults around her fail to recognize her work.
She likes stories about people who are curious, scared, stubborn, and still willing to step forward.
Marsh’s work often makes space for queer characters and happy endings, and she has spoken openly about her Type 1 diabetes and the value of stronger representation in media. She has also contributed to shared fictional worlds including Star Wars and Critical Role, a natural fit for a writer who enjoys exploring other people’s sandboxes as much as building her own.
She lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her partner, young child, and a lively household of rescued sighthounds, birds, a turtle, fish, and a garden. When she is away from the page, she spends time at the pottery studio, travels when she can, and remains especially fond of Ireland. The menagerie, the monsters, and the sense of play all feel right at home in her books.
