Author bio

Sara C. Roethle writes the kind of fantasy that likes a strong hook. A girl wakes after a century as a tree. A hunter discovers she is bound to a vampire. A teenager learns her ordinary life includes werewolves, demons, and a vampire she absolutely does not trust. Her books move fast, but the thing that keeps showing up is character. Public bios call her a fantasy author and part-time unicorn, which tells you a lot about the spirit of the work.

She has said that she was always a reader, but did not think she could write a book herself until something clicked when she was twenty-two. She wrote her first novel in about a month, self-published it soon after, and slowly turned that early experiment into a career. That beginning still matters when you look at her catalog. She has built series after series by following the worlds that kept tugging at her.

That long game shows up early in Xoe, her 2009 debut. It starts with a teenage girl dealing with school, friends, and a new guy in town, then cheerfully adds vampires, werewolves, witches, and demon trouble. Roethle kept returning to Xoe's world for years, which says something about how attached she gets to the people she writes.

She has even joked that she is incapable of letting them go.

For readers who want bigger secondary worlds, Tree of Ages is one of the clearest doors into her work. Its central image, Finn waking after a century spent as a tree, is strange in the best way, and the series grows from a mystery-driven opening into a much wider fantasy about memory, faie, prophecy, war, dragons, and gods. The Moonstone Chronicles goes another way, following Elmerah, a swamp witch pulled into imperial politics, demon trouble, and uneasy alliances with elves.

Roethle also likes stories where romance is tangled up with danger. Clockwork Alchemist drops a thief into a murder case involving an automaton with a soul, while Reign of Night begins with a vampire hunter who learns she is bound to the very kind she was raised to kill. More recently, Wicked Little Tricks shows a lighter side of her range, full of banter, magical contracts, and romantic chaos.

Across the catalog, a few patterns keep returning. She likes hidden worlds sitting beside ordinary life. She likes Celtic and Norse touches in her mythmaking. She likes characters who are frightened, stubborn, funny, and a little out of their depth. And she clearly enjoys mixing tones, letting a grim setup sit beside a dry joke or a very specific supernatural inconvenience.

That mix is part of her charm.

She also writes cozy paranormal mysteries under the pen name Sara Christene, which fits the way her fantasy often balances darkness with warmth and humor. Taken together, her books feel like the work of someone who loves fantasy's biggest possibilities but never wants to lose sight of the person stuck in the middle of the mess. Monsters matter. Gods matter. Magic matters. But the real engine is usually a character trying to figure out who they are, and what they are willing to do for the people they love.
