Return to Santa Flores

Series background & context

Santa Flores is a short contemporary romance sequence by Iris Johansen, linking Return to Santa Flores and No Red Roses. The stories follow different couples whose relationships bring private feelings into contact with glamorous public lives. A Las Vegas hotel and casino provides the central setting in one book, while a returning musician's touring life shapes the other. Both romances ask how a woman can hold on to her own wishes when a powerful man is certain he knows what should happen next.

The bright surroundings don't make the emotional choices simple.

In Return to Santa Flores, Jenny Cashman leaves her exclusive education in Switzerland and travels to Las Vegas. At nineteen, she wants independence and a reunion with Steve Jason, the man who supported her schooling after her father's death. His new hotel and casino promise an exciting change of surroundings. Jenny's real goal, however, is to make him see that she can now decide what she wants for herself, including the place he might have in her life.

Steve is a self-made hotel mogul who generally avoids emotional involvement. Jenny has always been the exception, which makes her return difficult for him to manage. He wants to protect her, but that familiar role is challenged by her growing maturity and his own attraction. Their shared history gives the romance its central problem: affection already exists, yet the relationship must change before they can understand each other as adults with choices of their own.

No Red Roses moves the romantic focus to Rex Brody and Tamara Ledford. Rex is returning to performance after success as a composer, with a major tour ahead of him. Before setting out, he visits his aunt in New Hampshire because he believes a local psychic is taking advantage of her. His anger brings him into contact with the psychic's niece, Tamara, and the encounter quickly turns his attention away from the dispute that first brought him there.

Rex wants Tamara to join him on the road, drawing her toward a world very different from her small-town life. The contrast between public performance and personal certainty shapes their courtship. His gestures and confidence don't automatically settle her doubts about his feelings. The flowers that give the book its title become part of that emotional language, adding another way for the couple to express and misunderstand what they want from each other.

The series offers intimate romances against the backdrop of wealth and entertainment. Jenny and Tamara face different situations, but both must deal with a man whose influence can overwhelm an ordinary conversation about the future. Readers can follow the connected books to move from Steve and Jenny's long acquaintance to Rex and Tamara's sudden attraction. The changing couples provide distinct love stories while retaining the same interest in independence, protection, and trust.
