Author bio
Sandra Balzo is a Wisconsin native who spent many years working in corporate public relations, event management, and publicity before she began writing mysteries. Her early career gave her a close look at deadlines, personalities, small crises, and the work that goes into making an event run smoothly. Those details later found a natural home in her fiction.
After about two decades in that world, Balzo made the switch to mystery writing. It was a practical change in one sense, she knew how to tell a story and organize a busy cast. But it also let her build the kind of communities where ordinary workdays can turn unexpectedly dangerous.
Coffee is often part of the evidence.
Her first major series introduces Maggy Thorsen, a divorced coffeehouse owner in the fictional Wisconsin town of Brookhills. Beginning with Uncommon Grounds, the books follow Maggy as she runs the Uncommon Grounds coffeehouse alongside her sharp-tongued business partner, Sarah Kingston, and keeps getting pulled into local crimes. Sheriff Jake Pavlik is both a steady presence in her life and a useful reminder that amateur detectives do not always make police work easier.
The Maggy Thorsen books are cozy mysteries, but they do not stay inside the coffee shop. A convention, a snowbound strip mall, a train outing in Florida, a writers' retreat, and old family secrets all give the series room to move. Readers who like a smart, practical heroine, lively back-and-forth, small-town grudges, and a mystery that plays fair will find plenty to enjoy in Bean There, Done That, A Cup of Jo, Flat White, and the later books.
Then Balzo headed south.
Her Main Street Mystery series centers on AnnaLise Griggs, a Wisconsin journalist who returns to her North Carolina hometown of Sutherton to help her mother. Running on Empty starts the series, followed by Dead Ends and Hit and Run. These books have a little more bite than the coffeehouse mysteries, with family history, mountain-town relationships, and AnnaLise's reporting instincts putting her close to trouble.
Balzo has also written the standalone suspense novel Heaven's Fire, set around a family fireworks business, as well as short fiction collected in The Grass is Always Greener and Other Stories. Her short stories have appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and her work has received Macavity, Derringer, and Robert L. Fish awards.
Her newer Dog-sitting Mysteries return to a world connected to Maggy and Sarah, this time through Arial Kingston. In Poison and Pooches, Arial leaves Wisconsin for Pacific Grove, California, where an inherited property, a dog-sitting business, and a body beneath a guesthouse floor create an awkward welcome to town.
Balzo now lives on California's Central Coast with her husband and three dogs. Wisconsin remains important to her work, though. Whether the setting is a Brookhills coffeehouse, a North Carolina mountain town, or the Monterey Peninsula, her stories tend to start with people trying to manage everyday life, right before a mystery makes that impossible.
