Main Street Mystery Books in Order

Sandra Balzo's Main Street Mystery series follows AnnaLise Griggs, a Wisconsin journalist whose return to her North Carolina hometown becomes much more complicated than a short family visit. The books are set in Sutherton, a small town in North Carolina's High Country, where mountain roads, local festivals, old money, and long memories all matter.

AnnaLise comes home in Running on Empty to help her mother, Daisy, whose memory loss has become a concern. She is used to working as a reporter in Wisconsin, so she has a professional habit of noticing what people avoid saying. Back in Sutherton, that habit puts her near a suspicious death and pulls her into the lives of people who remember her family well, whether she wants their attention or not.

This is a smaller series than the Maggy Thorsen books, with three linked mysteries: Running on Empty, Dead Ends, and Hit and Run. AnnaLise remains the connecting force, and her personal history is not just background. Her relationship with Daisy, her past in town, and new revelations about her own family make each investigation more personal than the last.

The setting does a lot of the work. Sutherton is not a generic small town with a few colorful neighbors added on top. Its steep roads, resort-town atmosphere, businesses, local customs, and class tensions shape the cases. AnnaLise may know how to pursue a story, but coming home means dealing with people who have known one another for years and who have reasons to protect old versions of the truth.

In Dead Ends, AnnaLise's former lover arrives in town with his wife and daughter, just as his wife is killed. The case leaves AnnaLise caught between embarrassment, old feelings, and police suspicion. Hit and Run raises the stakes again when AnnaLise learns more about Dickens Hart, Sutherton's wealthy and complicated leading citizen. A Thanksgiving gathering meant to bring together Hart's former partners and possible children ends with Hart murdered and AnnaLise under suspicion.

These are mysteries with a more pointed edge than a classic coffeehouse cozy. They still have humor and a lively cast, but family secrets, strained loyalties, and the pressure of returning home give the books a stronger emotional pull. AnnaLise is curious, level-headed, and persistent, though she can also be drawn into risks that would make a sensible editor tell her to go home.

Read them in publication order. The ongoing family threads and AnnaLise's changing place in Sutherton land best that way.
