Series background & context

The Sanctuary series gives Colleen Coble a fresh setup: an Alabama wild animal refuge full of big cats, financial strain, sabotage, and a heroine who has never stopped looking over her shoulder. It is one of her higher-concept worlds, but the emotional core is still familiar if you know her work.

The lead is Paradise Alden, a wildlife veterinarian whose life was shattered when her parents were murdered. Foster care, betrayal, and a devastating jaguar attack have left her slow to trust anyone, including Blake Lawson, the man tied to her first love and to the refuge she returns to in Ambush. From there, Prowl deepens both the murder plot and the pressure on the refuge. Conspiracy pushes Paradise, Blake, and Paradise's newly found brother toward the truth behind years of hidden connections.

The animals are not just scenery.

They give the series a different physical energy. Enclosures, tranquilizer guns, veterinary work, and the constant risk that something powerful can break loose all add tension before the mystery even gets moving. Coble uses that well, especially when the threat is human but the environment is already dangerous.

Another big draw is the long arc. Paradise is not solving one problem and walking away. She is piecing together her family history, testing whether love is safe, and deciding what kind of future she can believe in. That makes the trilogy feel tightly connected.

If you want Colleen Coble with a strong continuing heroine, unusual setting, and suspense that mixes cold-case pain with present-day sabotage, Sanctuary is a very good modern entry in her catalogue.
