Sam Reaves Books in Order

Sam Reaves is the crime-fiction name of Samuel Allen Salter, who was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1954. He has spent most of his life in and around Chicago, and that city’s changing neighborhoods, lakefront weather, public institutions, and street-level pressures give many of his novels their footing.

Alongside his fiction, Salter has worked as a teacher and translator. He speaks five languages and has traveled widely in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. That experience shows up less as travelogue than as practical texture, people changing languages, navigating unfamiliar streets, and trying to tell who is using whom.

Translation has remained an important part of his working life. His English translation of Mahmoud Saeed’s The World Through the Eyes of Angels received a 2010 award for translation of Arabic literature, a useful reminder that the careers behind a crime novel can be wider and stranger than the crime novel itself.

He has said that he grew up reading classic British thriller writers, especially Eric Ambler, John Buchan, and Geoffrey Household. Ambler’s knack for making a place feel real with a few well-chosen details was a particular influence. Reaves took that lesson into his own work, where a Chicago side street, a Barcelona bar, or a rural Illinois road can quickly become part of the danger.

His first novel, A Long Cold Fall, arrived in 1991 and introduced Cooper MacLeish, a Vietnam veteran driving a cab in Chicago. Cooper is not looking for trouble, but he has a stubborn habit of stepping in when somebody is being pushed around. The following books, including Fear Will Do It and Bury It Deep, keep him moving through blackmail, political corruption, and the parts of the city where a favor can become a liability.

Chicago is never just scenery in these stories.

Reaves later built another Chicago crime thread around the Dooley family, a police family whose cases reach into organized crime and department politics. Homicide 69 goes back to a tense Chicago summer in 1969, while Dooley’s Back follows Frank Dooley as he returns to a city he had every reason to leave. These books make room for family strain, old grudges, and the imperfect ways people try to get justice.

Under the name Dominic Martell, Salter writes the Pascual Rose novels, which trade Chicago’s hard edges for Barcelona and a wider world of intelligence services, old political violence, and unreliable alliances. Pascual is a former terrorist trying to live quietly after becoming an informant, but the past keeps finding him. The early novels follow his uneasy attempts at atonement, and Kill Chain brings him into a world of hacked devices, money laundering, and digital surveillance.

His later stand-alone suspense novels shift the setting again. They include small-town Illinois in Cold Black Earth and an Indiana college town in Running in the Dark. Across the books, Reaves returns to people who are tired, watchful, and a little out of place, then gives them a reason to keep going.

He has lived in Evanston and the greater Chicago area for much of his life. Whether writing about a cabdriver, a cop, a translator, or someone newly returned home, he tends to start with a person under pressure and lets the surrounding world close in.
