Series background & context

The Sam Levitt books are Peter Mayle's light, clever crime novels, set mostly in the south of France and built for readers who like their suspense served with good wine and an even better lunch. Sam is a former corporate lawyer with a taste for fine bottles, elegant schemes, and getting to the bottom of things. At his side is Elena Morales, smart, capable, and very much his equal, which gives the series some of its best energy.

The first book, The Vintage Caper, lays out the formula nicely. A spectacular theft of rare wine pulls Sam from Los Angeles to Bordeaux and Provence, where he follows the trail through collectors, vineyards, cooks, and con artists. That blend of crime, travel, appetite, and polished social comedy carries through the rest of the series.

In The Marseille Caper, Sam and Elena are drawn into a dangerous waterfront property deal for the wealthy Francis Reboul, a recurring figure whose money and connections open plenty of doors and attract plenty of trouble. The Corsican Caper raises the stakes again, sending Sam into a murkier world of mercenaries and underworld fixers. The Diamond Caper shifts to audacious jewel thefts across France, with Sam and Elena chasing a criminal mind that seems to stay one step ahead.

These are crime novels, but they don't feel grim.

Mayle is much more interested in charm, setting, and human appetite than in shock or brutality. The tension is real, but the books move with an easy confidence. Readers come for the mystery and stay for the atmosphere, the Riviera villas, the Marseille waterfront, the roads through Provence, the hotel rooms, markets, and endless meals. Food and drink are never background decoration in these books. They are part of the texture, and often part of the pleasure Sam takes in the chase.

Sam himself is a good guide to this world because he belongs just enough to move through it smoothly, but still sees it clearly. He knows expensive tastes, shady behavior, and the kind of rich people who cause headaches on two continents. Elena keeps the books grounded, and their partnership gives the series warmth as well as momentum. Francis Reboul, meanwhile, adds money, risk, and the sense that every favor may lead to a larger mess.

If you want to read the series, publication order is the best route: The Vintage Caper, The Marseille Caper, The Corsican Caper, then The Diamond Caper. Each book stands on its own, but together they build a relaxed, sunlit crime world where the pleasures are real, the crooks are stylish, and the danger is just sharp enough to keep the rosé from getting too comfortable.
