She is a medical examiner with a quick mind and little patience for nonsense, which makes her a useful partner and a strong counterweight to Sam. Other allies and suspects come and go, but the series keeps returning to the tension between Sam's desire for a calmer life and his inability to walk away when something feels wrong.
