Author bio

Kimberla Lawson Roby was born Kimberla Marie Lawson on May 3, 1965, in Rockford, Illinois, and grew up there with her parents, Lucius L. B. Lawson and Arletha Tennin Stapleton. Today she is known as a novelist, speaker, and encourager whose stories blend church life, family drama, and everyday faith.

As a teenager she moved through school quickly, graduating a year early from Auburn Senior High School’s Academy Program in 1982, then heading into business studies instead of a traditional liberal arts path.

She earned an associate degree in business from Rock Valley College in Rockford in 1987, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee in 1993, finishing with academic distinction. Those years taught her accounting, management, and the corporate language she would later weave into her fiction.

Before publishing a single book, Roby worked in a series of corporate, city, and state government jobs in Rockford, including serving as a financial analyst for the city. At 30 she felt pulled toward writing, and in her spare hours she drafted her first novel, Behind Closed Doors, finishing the manuscript in about seven months.

Finding a traditional publisher proved difficult, so in June 1996 she and her husband, Will M. Roby Jr., took money from his retirement account along with a small credit union loan and launched their own company, Lenox Press. Through that imprint she printed Behind Closed Doors herself, first placing it in independent African American bookstores and then in national chains, where strong early sales helped her land a literary agent and a deal for her second book.

By the late 1990s Roby had signed with veteran agent Elaine Koster, which led to new contracts with larger houses, including HarperCollins imprints and Grand Central Publishing. Her books began appearing on major bestseller lists, and Too Much of a Good Thing became her first New York Times bestseller, followed by awards such as the 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work in Fiction for The Reverend's Wife.

Much of that success rests on the long running Reverend Curtis Black novels, which introduced readers to a charming but deeply flawed Chicago pastor and his equally complicated family.

Beginning with Casting the First Stone in 2000 and concluding with Better Late Than Never in 2018, the series tracks Curtis Black through scandal, repentance, new churches in suburban Illinois, and ongoing clashes with his wives and children. Over fifteen books it widens to focus on characters like his daughter Alicia, son Matthew, and secret son Dillon, offering a mix of church politics, family loyalty, and the messier side of faith and ambition.

Roby has also written a shelf of standalones that explore friendships, marriages, and hidden trauma, from Here and Now and It's a Thin Line to A Taste of Reality, Changing Faces, A Deep Dark Secret, Secret Obsession, and later ensemble stories like Sister Friends Forever. Across these books she examines issues such as infidelity, single motherhood, workplace discrimination, domestic violence, sexual abuse, addiction, body image, and caring for aging parents, always through the lens of ordinary Black families trying to hold on to hope.

In recent years she has stepped into nonfiction with The Woman God Created You to Be, where she writes candidly about her own seasons of divorce, long marriage, career uncertainty, anxiety, grief, and spiritual growth, and offers practical guidance for women who want to put God first without losing themselves at work or at home. She now lives in Illinois with Will, continues to publish new stories and devotionals, and spends a good portion of her time speaking, teaching, and encouraging readers who see their own lives in her characters.
