The Sea Witch

by Eva Leigh

2025

Condemned as a witch, Alys Tanner steals a ship and becomes captain of an all-female pirate crew. Captured navigator Ben Priestley joins her on a dangerous quest through magic, monsters, and naval pursuit.

Series background & context

Salt & Sorcery marks Eva Leigh's move into pirate romantasy while keeping many of the concerns that run through her historical romances. The first book listed here, The Sea Witch, is set in a world where women are forbidden to use magic, and the sea becomes the one place where escape might be possible.

The freedom is real, but so is the danger.

The story begins with Alys Tanner, a woman condemned as a witch in Puritan New England. Instead of accepting execution, she uses her magic to flee, steals a ship, and becomes captain of The Sea Witch. Her crew is made up of women who can wield sorcery, and together they survive as pirates on the Caribbean high seas while the colonial British navy hunts them.

The central romance starts when Ben Priestley, a naval navigator, is captured by Alys and her crew. He is trained to follow orders and trust the navy's version of the world. Alys has every reason to distrust him. Their forced partnership grows out of necessity after dangerous truths point them toward a quest that could weaken the navy's control of the seas.

This is not a drawing-room story in costume. The setting matters at every turn: ships, islands, storms, tropical waters, rival pirates, and monsters in the deep. Magic is tied to fear and control, because the people in power want to define it as a threat when it belongs to women. Alys's ship becomes both weapon and refuge, a floating answer to the rules that tried to kill her.

The tone is bigger and more adventurous than Leigh's Regency series, but the emotional engine will feel familiar to her readers. Alys wants freedom without apology. Ben has to decide what loyalty means when the institution he serves is cruel. Their attraction grows through argument, danger, and the slow recognition that each sees something in the other worth protecting.

Since this page follows the books in the database, The Sea Witch is the place to begin. Expect enemies to lovers, pirate politics, sea magic, a buttoned-up naval hero, and a captain who has already paid too high a price for letting other people decide what women are allowed to become.
