Series background & context

The Sage Saga is Julius St Clair's long-running epic fantasy series, set in a world where Sages are trained as powerful warriors. The story opens in the kingdom of Allay, where an academy turns ordinary young recruits into fighters whose abilities can shape the future of whole kingdoms.

James is one of those recruits. He enters the academy unwillingly and has to survive its demanding lessons while learning that strength is about more than winning a fight. Early books put training, friendship, trust, and first responsibilities at the center of the story.

Then the world gets much bigger.

As the series moves beyond The Last of the Sages, the characters face rival kingdoms, dangerous political leaders, invading forces, old legends, and the cost of holding power. The Sages are not just soldiers. They are expected to protect people and help build a future, even when the people around them disagree about what that future should look like.

The books bring in a growing cast, including young warriors, rulers, teachers, enemies, and families caught in the fallout of war. In The Dark Kingdom, a princess and seven Sages search for the legendary stones needed to stop a sinister threat. Later installments continue the wider struggle across Allay and its neighboring lands, with shifting alliances and leaders who are willing to use fear to stay in control.

The tone is straightforward, adventure-focused fantasy. Expect training scenes, magical abilities, battles, quests, romance, betrayals, and characters who have to mature quickly. The series also spends time on questions of loyalty, duty, grief, and whether a good goal can excuse cruel methods.

Start with The Last of the Sages. The Sage Academy is a useful early companion book, but the main storyline continues through The Dark Kingdom and Hail to the Queen. Because the stakes and cast expand over time, this is a series that works best in order.
