Series background & context

The Sacramento books are built around a single, chilling thread: a secretive religious cult called Eden that preys on children and refuses to let its victims go. Set mostly in and around California's capital, the series follows survivors who are determined to expose what was done to them.

In Say You're Sorry, recovering alcoholic Daisy Dawson fights off a masked attacker on her way home from an evening meeting and manages to pull a distinctive necklace from his neck. Homicide detective Rafe Sokolov recognises the symbol and calls in his friend, FBI Special Agent Gideon Reynolds, who escaped Eden as a teenager. Daisy, who has her own history with addiction and family lies, finds herself drawn into Gideon's hunt for both a serial killer and the cult that shaped him.

Say No More shifts the spotlight to Gideon's sister, Mercy Callahan, who was left behind when he fled. Years later, she has built a life and career far from Eden, but the scars of that childhood remain. When new evidence about the cult surfaces, Mercy travels to Sacramento to confront Gideon and to explore her complicated feelings for Rafe. Her arrival also alerts Ephraim Burton, the elder who once claimed her as a child bride, that she is still alive, triggering a deadly game of pursuit.

The trilogy concludes with Say Goodbye, in which Gideon, Mercy and fellow agent Tom Hunter finally get a solid lead on Eden's hidden compound in the Pacific Northwest. Tom's long friendship with combat medic Liza Barkley turns into something more as they work together to rescue captives and bring the cult's leaders to justice. The book is as much about chosen family and healing as it is about raids and manhunts.

Throughout the Sacramento arc, Rose does not flinch from showing the physical and psychological damage inflicted by charismatic abusers, but she also gives her survivors space to be funny, angry, petty and brave in everyday ways. Law enforcement agencies from multiple states cooperate uneasily, old friends from other cities lend support and the heroes make mistakes as often as they make arrests.

Because the Eden storyline continues from book to book, this is one part of her universe where reading in order really matters. Taken together, the Sacramento novels offer a powerful mix of cult thriller, procedural and slow burn romance, with an emphasis on what it means to reclaim your own story after years of being told who you are.
