Author bio
Karen Rose grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, where books were as common in the house as homework. She studied chemical engineering at the University of Maryland, a practical choice that let her love of problem solving sit alongside a steady corporate job.
In college she met her future husband, Martin, on a blind date when they were both seventeen. After graduation they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked as a chemical engineer for a large consumer goods company and earned a couple of patents. Even in the lab, though, scenes and bits of dialogue kept distracting her from equations, so she started writing them down just to clear her head.
What began as a private outlet quickly turned into a new career. Draft by draft she taught herself to write long form, and the story that would become Don't Tell slowly took shape, following a woman who fakes her own death to escape an abusive cop husband. When the book was finally published in 2003, it launched the interconnected, city based romantic suspense world she is known for today.
From there she built out a web of series set in Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Sacramento, New Orleans and San Diego. Each cluster of books stands on its own but also drops in familiar detectives, prosecutors, doctors and survivors from earlier stories, creating a sense of one large, messy, found family spread across the country.
Readers often point to titles like I'm Watching You, Silent Scream, Closer Than You Think and Say You're Sorry as good examples of what she does best. The crimes are dark, sometimes brutal, but the focus stays on ordinary people trying to protect one another, rebuild after trauma and choose love while the worst kind of violence swirls around them. Along the way she has picked up major romance awards, including multiple RITA wins for romantic suspense, and her books regularly appear on bestseller lists in the United States and overseas.
Before writing full time, Rose also spent time in the classroom as a high school chemistry and physics teacher. That background shows up in the way she handles forensic detail and the nuts and bolts of investigations. She likes systems that make sense, whether she is talking about blood spatter or how a police task force would realistically operate over months of a difficult case.
After years in Ohio she and her family moved to Florida, where she balanced parenting, teaching and an increasingly demanding writing schedule. More recently she has settled in Washington State, trading humid summers for the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Wherever she lives, home tends to include at least one big dog, a cat and a steady stream of visiting family.
Outside the books she is open about her love of theme parks, travel and all things Disney, and she has studied martial arts, which feeds into the physicality of her fight scenes. She is also a self confessed night owl who is happiest when she can sink into a story for long stretches of uninterrupted time.
Across more than thirty novels and novellas, Rose has stuck to a few constants. The villains are frightening but never glamorised, the survivors are allowed to be angry and messy, and the romances grow out of people working side by side under pressure. That mix of high stakes plotting and grounded, everyday emotion is what keeps readers following her characters from one city to the next.
