Author bio

Sabrina Jeffries was born in New Orleans, but she mostly grew up far from it. When she was seven, her missionary parents moved the family to Thailand, and she lived there through her teens, with one stretch back in Louisiana along the way. Books became company, escape, and eventually practice. By the time she was twelve, she was already writing her own stories, and romance was there from the start.

That early habit never really left.

She carried her love of reading into graduate school, earning a Ph.D. in English literature and teaching for a time at Tulane University. Academic life suited part of her, but not all of it. She has spoken about how fiction gave her a kind of freedom that scholarly writing did not, and that pull gradually became impossible to ignore.

Romance won.

The road to publication was not quick. Jeffries wrote through a long run of rejection before finally selling a historical romance, and those early books appeared under the name Deborah Martin. She later also wrote as Deborah Nicholas, while Sabrina Jeffries became the name most readers know best. The pen names helped separate the branches of her work, but the common thread stayed the same: strong emotional stakes, sharp tension, and characters who do not make life easy for each other.

Her backlist shows how wide that range can be. The Pirate Lord has high-seas adventure and a bold heroine who refuses to be pushed around. Never Seduce a Scoundrel opens her School for Heiresses books with wit, chemistry, and a heroine who wants more from life than a safe match. The Truth About Lord Stoneville leans into family trouble, inheritance pressure, and a deliciously unruly hero. Much later, Project Duchess and A Duke for Diana show how well she handles layered family mysteries alongside sparkling courtship.

Readers tend to come to Jeffries for the banter, but they stay for the way she builds whole family webs around a romance. Her series often revolve around siblings, half siblings, old scandals, hidden parents, missing heirs, or secrets that have sat too long in locked drawers. Even when the mood is playful, there is usually some ache under it. The characters are not only falling in love, they are also trying to make sense of who they are and what their families have done to them.

She likes heroines with jobs, schemes, opinions, and very little patience.

That shows up again and again, from schoolmistresses and reformers to chemists, writers, actresses, and party planners. Her heroes may arrive as dukes, rogues, soldiers, investigators, or gamblers, but they usually meet women who force them to rethink the rules they live by. It gives the books a lively push and pull that feels recognizably hers, whether the story is an older Deborah Martin historical or a later Regency series.

Outside the novels, Jeffries has remained open about the life around the work. She lives in North Carolina, and she has written about traveling with her husband and adult autistic son. She has also shared her interest in autism awareness and differently abled characters, while still making room for pleasures that sound a lot like a good rainy day, jigsaw puzzles, chocolate, music, and reading.

More than sixty novels and works of short fiction into her career, she still writes books built for story first. Clever setups. Strong feelings. Families in a mess. Heroines who will not behave if behaving gets in the way of a better ending.
