Getting her new cake decorating business, Daphne’s Delectable Cakes, off the ground is hard enough now that Daphne’s moved back to her southern Virginia hometown, but orders have been even slower since she found Yodel’s body. She soon realizes, however, that just about everybody in town had a reason to poison the cantankerous busybody, from the philandering pet shop owner, to Yodel’s church potluck nemesis, to the Save-A-Buck’s cranky produce manager-turned-bagger. Now, to help prove she’s no confectionary killer, Daphne recruits her old flame, Ben Jacobs, editor of the local newspaper, and quickly stirs up a long-hidden family scandal that just might hold the secret ingredient she needs to solve the case. All she’s got to do is roll up her sleeves and get her hands a little dirty before the real culprit decides that taking sweet revenge on Daphne will be icing on the cake.

Author bio
Gayle Trent is one of those writers whose shelves make more sense once you know all her names. She also writes as Amanda Lee and Gayle Leeson, and each name lets her explore a slightly different corner of the mystery world, from embroidery shops to Southern cafés to a fashion studio with a ghost in residence.
Names help her sort the shelves.
She lives in Virginia with her family, and animals have clearly made their mark on the work. One real-life Great Pyrenees even helped inspire Mr. O'Ruff, the dog in her Daphne Martin books. That small detail tells you a lot about her fiction too. Even when the setups are playful, they usually start from ordinary life and the things she knows well.
Her path to publishing was not a straight line. Before writing full time, she worked a range of jobs, including receptionist, secretary, administrative assistant, bailiff to a judge, and freelance nonfiction writer. In college, a teacher encouraged her after reading one of her stories, and that nudge helped her take fiction more seriously.
She started out with small presses, then made an unusually hands-on move and launched her own publishing company, Grace Abraham Publishing. That gave her a close look at the business side of books, which was useful, but it also meant spending huge amounts of time on marketing, events, and web work instead of writing. Eventually she scaled that back, found an agent, and broke into traditional publishing with the Embroidery Mysteries.
That series, beginning with The Quick and the Thread, introduced Marcy Singer, an embroidery shop owner in Tallulah Falls, Oregon. Readers who love cozy mysteries tend to click with Trent's mix of hobby detail, small-town friction, and a heroine who keeps worrying at a problem until the whole thing comes loose. The books are crafty, funny, and easy to sink into.
As Gayle Trent, she wrote the Daphne Martin Cake mysteries, which start with Murder Takes the Cake. Those books bring her back to Virginia, with cake decorating, family baggage, and a heroine rebuilding her life after a bad marriage. Later, under Gayle Leeson, she kept the cozy spirit going in The Calamity Café and the Down South Café mysteries, then added a paranormal twist in Designs On Murder, where vintage fashion and a 1930 ghost share the same stage.
She doesn't stay in one lane for long.
That is part of the appeal. Even when the setup changes, her stories usually circle the same pleasures: women making a life for themselves, close communities that notice everything, work that matters, and mysteries that grow out of ordinary places like shops, schools, cafés, and town events. Even her portal fantasy mystery An Eyre of Mystery still feels like the work of a writer who loves character, curiosity, and the mess people make of their lives.
These days she writes as a hybrid author, moving between traditional publishing and independent work. Her catalog is broad, but the through line is easy to spot. If you like cozies with humor, practical heroines, crafty or culinary hooks, and a strong sense of place, Gayle Trent has probably written a version of that world under one name or another.
