Author bio

Rysa Walker was born in Pensacola, Florida, and grew up in Northwest Florida. In more than one bio, she has described a childhood on a cattle ranch in the Panhandle, where books were a main form of escape and entertainment. When she was not reading, she was imagining bigger worlds, stranger futures, and stories that could bend reality just a little.

That mix of curiosity and restlessness never really left her.

She later went to college in North Carolina and earned a PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before writing fiction full time, she taught political science and history, work that helped sharpen the parts of her novels readers often notice first: the logic of her worlds, the way institutions behave, and the sense that history is made by people making messy choices under pressure.

A later move back to North Carolina helped too. After her family settled in Cary in 2006, she shifted to teaching online from home, and the quieter routine gave her room to finish the novel that would change her career. That book began life as Time's Twisted Arrow, a self-published time-travel story that she entered in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. It won the grand prize and was later republished as Timebound.

That was the start of a very busy second act.

Timebound, followed by Time's Edge and Time's Divide, introduced the CHRONOS world that still sits at the center of Walker's bibliography. Readers come to those books for the time travel, but they tend to stay for the family secrets, the historical settings, and the constant question of what happens when changing the past feels personal. The related CHRONOS Origins books, beginning with Now, Then, and Everywhen, take that same fascination with history and consequences and push it into a broader, future-facing adventure.

Walker did not stay in one lane. The Delphi Effect mixes ghosts, psychic abilities, and thriller pacing, while Improbable drops a missing-person mystery into Gilded Age New York and lets history, the uncanny, and detective work collide. Under the name C. Rysa Walker, she also writes mysteries such as Curtains for Romeo and A Murder in Helvetica Bold, which show the same love of puzzles in a very different key.

What ties her books together is easy to spot. She likes characters who are smart but cornered, systems that look stable until they crack, and plots where history is never just background scenery. Even in the cozier mysteries, there is usually someone digging through old secrets, trying to work out what really happened, and learning that the past is not finished with anybody yet.

Her success has been substantial without much fuss around it. Her books have sold close to a million copies, have been translated into fourteen languages, and The Delphi Effect earned both an Editors' Pick mention and a thriller award nomination. The appeal is pretty plain: Walker writes twisty stories that like big ideas, but she keeps them moving and keeps the people inside them recognizable.

She lives in North Carolina and has written about sharing life with her family and a very energetic golden retriever. The old kid who read books for company and watched Star Trek whenever she got control of the television still seems present in the work. You can feel it in the timelines, the mysteries, and the sense that the world is always larger, stranger, and more interesting than it first appears.
