Put them together and you get a series that feels part historical mystery, part procedural, and part character study.

They are a terrific match.

Trudy brings energy, curiosity, and the willingness to ask the question everyone else thinks is silly. Ryder brings experience, patience, and a cool, analytical mind. He is not warm in any easy way, and she is not yet established enough to speak freely in every room she enters. That tension gives the books life. They are learning how to work together while also navigating the rules of a period that still expects women in uniform to know their place and stay there.

The cases often begin with deaths that seem accidental, straightforward, or already explained. A reopened file, a poisoned beauty contestant, a child found in a well, a suspicious fire on bonfire night, a murdered May Queen, a snowbound New Year's death, or trouble in an Oxford club. Once Ryder and Loveday start pulling at the threads, the neat public version of events quickly falls apart. Martin is very good at that moment when a respectable story stops holding together.

Oxford matters just as much here as it does in the Hillary Greene books, but the feel is different. This is a city of colleges, side streets, dance halls, respectable drawing rooms, police hierarchy, and shifting postwar rules. The period detail is present without becoming fussy. You notice the clothes, the assumptions, the way people talk about class and reputation, and especially the limits placed on Trudy because she is young and female. Those details are not just decoration. They shape how the investigations move.

The tone is classic and approachable, but the stakes are real. These are not comic capers. They are tightly built mysteries with emotional fallout, family pressure, and the occasional sense that danger is moving closer than either lead would like. The partnership also develops nicely over the series. Mutual respect builds slowly, and that slow build is one of the things readers come back for.

If you want historical crime that is clever without being showy, and character-driven without losing the puzzle, Ryder and Loveday is a strong place to land. A Fatal Obsession sets the pattern perfectly, and from there the books widen both the world and the bond between the two leads.
