Author bio

Dawn Ryder is the contemporary romance name used by Mary Wine, a writer who has spent years moving between hot modern romance and historical love stories. She has said she's from sunny California, and she lives in Southern California, where both sides of that writing life seem to fit just fine.

Stories came first.

She has talked about growing up before portable entertainment devices were everywhere, with a mother who worked as a librarian and family camping trips that left a lot of room for imagination. On those weekends outside, she made up stories to entertain her younger brother. Writing them down later felt like the natural next step.

That early habit turned into a career, but not in just one lane. Under the Mary Wine name, she became known for historical romance, especially books filled with Scots, knights, clan loyalties, and the kind of detail that comes from someone who really enjoys the research. Dawn Ryder gave her another outlet, one where she could trade castles for safe houses, tour buses, boardrooms, and very intense chemistry.

You can see that shift in books like Dangerous to Know, Dare You to Run, and Deep Into Trouble, where special operations heroes, betrayals, and undercover work crash into love stories. In the Rock Band novels, starting with Rock Me Two Times, she moves into the orbit of fame and music, but the engine is still the same. Strong attraction. Stronger wills.

She likes pressure-cooker setups.

Across the Dawn Ryder books, the patterns are easy to spot in a good way. Her heroes tend to be soldiers, protectors, musicians, or powerful men who are used to taking charge. Her heroines push back, even when the pull between them is obvious. Books like Close to the Edge, Don't Look Back, and Filthy Rich keep circling trust, control, loyalty, danger, and the question of what happens when two stubborn people want very different things from the same relationship. Readers who like high heat usually get that, but they also get women who do not fold easily.

Out of Bounds and Filthy Rich show another side of Ryder's work. Those stories are more contained than the team-based books, but they still turn on power, fear, and the risk of giving someone too much room in your life. Even when the setup is steamy, there is usually a real tug-of-war underneath it.

Off the page, she has shared plenty of practical, slightly mischievous details about her life. She makes historical clothing, from corsets to petticoats, and she has said reenactment has been part of her world for years. That is more than a hobby. It helps explain why her books, even the hottest ones, often pay attention to clothing, movement, and the physical reality of a scene instead of treating everything like a blur.

Home sounds busy, too. She has spoken about her husband, their two sons, and a parrot that runs the house. She has also joked about owning more corsets than bras and binge-watching between books, which feels pretty on brand for a writer who can move from kilts to covert ops without blinking.

That is probably why her books feel busiest when characters are cornered. A mission is going bad, a tour is getting messy, an ex is turning up, or a secret is about to spill. Ryder likes emotional heat, but she also likes movement.

What readers usually come to Dawn Ryder for is not polish for its own sake. It is momentum. Whether she is writing a military romantic suspense novel, a rock star story, or one of her earlier erotic romances, she likes putting people under stress and seeing what they do with want, fear, and trust. That mix of heat, danger, and emotional stubbornness is really the center of her work.
