The Four Graces brings in characters connected through friends of the Dunnes, while Mrs. Tim Gets a Job sends Hester Christie to manage a hotel in the town, letting readers see it through the eyes of an outsider who is quickly drawn into local dramas. Later still, Sarah's Cottage and related stories bring another young couple and their extended family into the area, tying the Ayrton and Morris books back to the Borders.

One of the pleasures of the Ryddelton sequence is how ordinary it feels. Stevenson writes about tea tables, kirk socials, school choices, and quiet acts of generosity, always with an ear for how people talk and what they do not say. Big events like war, bereavement, or financial disaster are there, but they are filtered through conversations in sitting rooms and at kitchen sinks.

Because the books were written over many years, the tone shifts from Edwardian warmth to wartime uncertainty and finally to the quieter optimism of the postwar decades. Yet the town itself provides continuity, a place that witnesses several generations finding work, love, and a sense of home.
