Author bio
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author who writes in English, best known for stories set in the Himalayan foothills and for the boy character Rusty. Over a long career he has written fiction, essays, and memoir, often with the quiet pace of a walk through a hill station.
He was born on 19 May 1934 in Kasauli, in what was then British India. As a child he moved around with his parents, spending time in places such as Jamnagar and Dehradun, and later Delhi. His father served with the Royal Air Force, and Bond has written about the mix of curiosity and loneliness that can come with being the new kid in town.
He was a reader early, and books became a kind of portable home.
When Bond was ten, his father died in Calcutta, and his life changed abruptly. He was sent to Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, a boarding school where friendships, pranks, and homesickness all sit close together. Those years show up again and again in his writing, not as speeches about childhood, but as small scenes: a dormitory at night, a cold morning, a familiar voice in the corridor.
At seventeen, Bond went to England, working a series of jobs while trying to write. In London he finished The Room on the Roof, a novel about a teenager who runs away in Dehra and searches for freedom, friends, and a place to belong. The book was published in 1956, and it won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, a big early nudge that he could keep going.
Rusty wasn't just a character, he was Bond's way of talking to his younger self.
Bond returned to India and eventually made the hills his base, settling in Landour, near Mussoorie, in Uttarakhand. From there he wrote about the everyday theatre of small towns: shopkeepers, schoolboys, travellers on trains, and the steady background presence of forests, rain, and birds. Some books, like The Blue Umbrella and Angry River, are short and direct, written for young readers without talking down to them. Others, like A Flight of Pigeons and Delhi Is Not Far, take a darker look at history, poverty, or the costs of wanting a different life.
His stories have travelled far beyond the page. A Flight of Pigeons was adapted into the film Junoon, and The Blue Umbrella became a children's film. His darkly funny novella Susanna's Seven Husbands inspired a later film adaptation, and several of his Rusty and ghost stories have been adapted for Indian television.
Bond has picked up major Indian honours along the way, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, the Padma Shri, and the Padma Bhushan. He has also received the Bal Sahitya Puraskar and a Sahitya Akademi fellowship.
What keeps people coming back isn't polish or spectacle, it's the feeling that someone is paying attention. Bond writes about small kindnesses, sudden fear on a dark road, and the comfort of a familiar place. Even when a story turns spooky, it still sounds like it's being told by someone sitting nearby, with the window open to the hills.
