Royal Highlander Books in Order

The Royal Highlander series is a three-book historical romance set in Scotland during the Radical War of 1820. May McGoldrick uses that real period of unrest as the backdrop for stories about women who refuse to stay quiet, men carrying the damage of war and political violence, and communities caught between reform and repression.

The series begins with Highland Crown. Isabella Drummond is a physician who has fled into the Highlands after the death of her husband, a reformer. Highland Jewel moves the focus to Isabella's younger sister, Maisie Murray, and Niall Campbell, a former officer in the Royal Highland Regiment. Maisie has a gentle public manner but strong views about women's rights and reform. Niall has already seen what service and conflict can do to people. Their relationship unfolds as the forces dividing Scotland become harder to ignore.

The final novel, Highland Sword, follows Morrigan Drummond, Isabella's stepdaughter. Morrigan is committed to the cause of Scottish freedom and seeks revenge against the English spymaster she holds responsible for her father's death. Aidan Grant is a principled barrister trying to defend innocent men and expose corruption. They want justice, but they do not initially agree on how to get it. That difference creates the push and pull at the center of their romance.

Each book has its own couple and satisfying romantic arc, yet the series works best in order because the women are connected by family, shared danger, and the changing political climate around them. Familiar characters return, and events in one novel shape the risks faced in the next.

This is historical romance with a strong sense of place. Inverness, Edinburgh, Highland roads, and communities under surveillance all matter to the action. The books do not treat history as wallpaper. The struggle for representation, fair wages, and civil rights puts pressure on every choice the characters make.

Start with Highland Crown for Isabella and Cinaed's story, then continue with Highland Jewel and Highland Sword. Expect determined heroines, wounded but capable heroes, conspiracy, action, and love stories that ask what people are willing to risk for freedom and for one another.
