The Royal Brotherhood series takes one of Jeffries's favorite ideas, family trouble, and gives it a sharp, very public twist. The three heroes are fictional bastard sons of the Prince of Wales, men bound together less by affection at first than by the fact that the same powerful father denied them. They make a pact to help one another secure what they want, and of course what they want soon includes women who upset every tidy plan.

Illegitimacy hangs over everything.

That background shapes the tone of In the Prince's Bed, To Pleasure a Prince, and One Night with a Prince. These men move in aristocratic circles, but never as comfortably as legitimate heirs. They know society's doors, yet they also know how quickly those doors can close. That gives the series some bite. The heroes are proud, wary, and often ready to assume the worst. The heroines, meanwhile, are not impressed by brooding titles or royal blood if the man attached to them is behaving badly.

The first book introduces Alec Black and Katherine Merivale, with money, marriage plans, and deception pulling them together. The second turns to Marcus North, the so-called Dragon Viscount, whose fearsome reputation meets a heroine with secrets of her own. The third follows Gavin Byrne, owner of a notorious gaming club, in a story that mixes a staged mistress role, hidden letters, and a revenge plot that gets emotionally messy in the best way.

Across the books, the appeal is easy to spot. Jeffries likes damaged men who talk boldly but do not quite know what to do with tenderness when it arrives. She likes women who are sensible right up until the moment they are forced to gamble on themselves. And she likes making social reputation both a weapon and a temptation.

If you want a Jeffries series that feels a little more openly scandalous than the school or family sagas, start here. The books stand alone reasonably well, but together they show three half-brothers stumbling, resisting, and slowly becoming a real family.
