Series background & context

The Rough Diamonds series follows the rise and fallout of the Diamond crime family, moving between glossy London neighborhoods and the rougher edges of Glasgow. It starts with Nick Diamond, a charismatic solicitor whose respectable image hides a very different life.

In Diamond Geezer, Nick looks like the kind of lawyer everyone can trust. Behind closed doors he is making his real money on a Glasgow housing estate ruled by a ruthless gang boss, cutting deals that tie desperate residents to him and his underworld partners. The tension in the series begins here, with one man split between Chelsea cocktail parties and brutal enforcement work in the north.

By Rough Diamonds, the focus shifts to his wife, Patsy. Nick has been murdered and Patsy is left picking through the wreckage of their marriage and his criminal accounts. She is tough, fiercely protective of her family and determined to know who killed him and where the money went. Her uneasy alliance with Natasha, Nick’s pregnant mistress, pulls two very different women into the same dangerous circle.

Queen of Diamonds finds Patsy at the head of the family, trying to secure her late husband’s empire just as new enemies surface. A woman from Nick’s past turns up claiming to be her business partner and threatens to expose old secrets unless Patsy falls into line. At the same time a rival crew sparks a turf war that forces Patsy to decide how far she is willing to go to stay on top.

In Forever Diamonds, Patsy hopes for a quieter life and a more legitimate future for her children, but the world she helped build does not let go so easily. As pressure mounts from the police, rivals and supposed allies, she has to choose between protecting the people she loves and protecting the business that keeps them all afloat.

Across the four books, the Rough Diamonds series is less about a single heist and more about the long grind of power, money and family loyalty. Expect nightclub offices and courtrooms, council flats and country mansions, with everyday moments of humour and affection breaking through the violence. The same faces appear and reappear on both sides of the law, so the tension is as much about who will stay loyal as it is about who will live. Readers who like character driven gangland fiction with a strong woman at the centre will find plenty to dig into here.
