Gold Books in Order

The Gold series zooms in on Julie and Ralph Gold, a couple who start at the very bottom of the ladder in Liverpool and claw their way into the criminal big league. It is a two book arc that blends survival story, dark romance and streetwise hustle.

In Gold Digger, Julie is young, sharp and broke. With her mother in prison for murder and her little sister Frankie to protect, she turns to sex work as the quickest way to keep a roof over their heads. The men are just customers until she meets Ralph Goldstein, an ex con with ambition, patience and a willingness to get his hands dirty.

Separately, Julie and Ralph have already learned how ruthless the streets can be. Together they start to see the chance for something bigger, building small scams into larger operations and eyeing a future where they are the ones making the rules. The danger is that every deal ties them more deeply into a world where trust is scarce and betrayal is common.

Fools Gold picks up as the couple leave their grim life in Liverpool and head for London, promising themselves that this time they will go straight. Julie wants a clean slate and a legitimate business, but their reputation arrives ahead of them and doors that should lead to ordinary work instead open back onto the underworld. A final, high risk job offers a way out, if they are brave or reckless enough to take it.

Across both books, the Gold stories are about a woman who refuses to be a victim and a man who is dangerous but genuinely devoted to her. Godden leans into banter, sex, money and sharp edged humour, but she also shows the emotional cost of living one bad decision away from disaster. Characters from the Tony Lambrianu novels drift in and out of the action, so readers who follow all of Godden’s series will spot familiar names and overlapping loyalties.
