Roselle Lim Books in Order

Roselle Lim was born in the Philippines and moved with her family to Canada as a child. She grew up in north Scarborough, Toronto, in a diverse Asian neighborhood. Her Chinese and Filipino background, along with a home where Catholic traditions and superstition met, still shapes the worlds she creates.

Stories were part of her childhood long before she published a novel. Her paternal grandmother, her lola, shared Filipino folktales and comics with her, and Lim grew up reading mythology and looking for magic in everyday life. Those early stories gave her a lasting interest in family legends, food, fate, and the things people carry from one generation to the next.

She also had a stubborn reason to keep writing. After a third-grade teacher told her that her grammar was too poor for her to become a writer, Lim quietly decided she would prove that prediction wrong.

Writing was not an immediate career path. She studied humanities and history, with a focus on East Asian studies, and later returned to writing more seriously after becoming a parent. She has described writing as a way to give voice to thoughts she might not otherwise say aloud.

Her 2019 debut, Natalie Tan's Book of Luck and Fortune, brought readers to San Francisco's Chinatown, where a grieving aspiring chef inherits her grandmother's restaurant. It combines recipes, neighborhood change, family tension, and a little magic. Food is never just decoration in Lim's work. It can hold memory, show care, or help people say what they cannot put into words.

She followed it with Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop, about a young woman who reads fortunes in tea leaves and heads to Paris to understand a gift she has spent years trying to escape. Sophie Go's Lonely Hearts Club moves to Toronto, where a struggling matchmaker finds unexpected clients and a found family among seven older bachelors.

Then came Night for Day, a fantasy romance about former college sweethearts, Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay, who reconnect in London only to become trapped in opposing magical antique shops. With Celestial Banquet, Lim turned to young adult fantasy, following a teenage noodle cook entering a dangerous cooking contest for the gods.

Across these books, she returns to people trying to make a life on their own terms while still facing family expectations, old hurts, and questions about belonging. Her characters often have work to do, food to make, relationships to repair, and a touch of the impossible to contend with.

Lim lives on the north shore of Lake Erie. When she is not writing, she keeps creative projects going, including crafts such as sewing, woodburning, and sticker-making.
