Donovan clearly enjoys the clothes and manners of the 1930s, but she has also talked about being drawn to the decade's political strain, especially the upheavals and independence movements happening around empire. That gives the books a wider frame than a simple period puzzle.

The characters help too. Ruby and Fina are dressmakers, but they are not ornamental heroines. They are observant, stubborn, funny in different ways, and often working more than one problem at a time. Readers who stick with the books tend to come back for that partnership, and for the way Donovan uses fashion, travel, and social performance as part of the mystery rather than just background wallpaper.

Later titles like Death in Velvet and The Art of Murder open the world even more, moving into Paris fashion circles and the London art world, with Cornwall never far behind. Donovan has said that when she starts a book, she often knows the characters, the setting, and the murder before she knows the killer. She has also said she loves the fair-play mystery, the kind that invites the reader to solve the puzzle too. You can feel that method on the page. Suspicion shifts, motives overlap, and nobody looks settled too early.

Her own life changed shape as well. She left academia in 2019, and since late that year she and her partner have traveled full-time as house and pet sitters. They spent lockdown in Cornwall, which fed into her writing, and she has said she now lives in the UK. It sounds like the right life for someone who likes new rooms, new landscapes, and the chance to watch how people behave when they think nobody is paying attention.

She has mentioned 1930s jazz, cozy writing spots, and cats as part of what gets her into the right mood.
