Sign of the Cross

by Glenn Cooper

2018

Series background & context

Cal Donovan is a Harvard professor of religion and archaeology with an unfortunate habit of getting pulled into crises the Church would rather keep quiet. When popes, cardinals, or old friends need someone who understands both ancient texts and modern politics, Cal is the one they call.

The series opens with Sign of the Cross, where a young priest in rural Italy appears to suffer the stigmata. The pope asks Cal to separate miracle from fraud, but his investigation intersects with a violent neo-Nazi cult chasing the Holy Lance and willing to turn faith into a weapon.

In The Debt and Three Marys, the stakes shift from relics to the survival of the Church itself. Cal unearths a forgotten nineteenth-century Vatican loan that has ballooned into a ruinous obligation, and later is sent to investigate three teenage girls, all named Mary, who are virgins yet mysteriously pregnant. Financial catastrophe and theological shockwaves sit side by side.

The Showstone and The Fourth Prophecy dig deeper into the uneasy border between mysticism and science. A mysterious obsidian “showstone” tied to Cal’s own family seems to grant disturbing visions, while a rumored lost prophecy sends him racing across Europe to stop fanatics from turning an old prediction into a modern disaster.

The wider Donovan universe also folds in The Devil Will Come, which follows archaeologist-turned-nun Elisabetta Celestino as she uncovers an ancient sect hidden beneath Rome. She later reappears in The Lost Pope, where a fragment of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene threatens to upend ideas about who once led the early Church, and in The Last Conclave, when a papal election goes horrifyingly wrong and the cardinals simply vanish.

Across the books, readers can expect globe-trotting puzzles, tense Vatican back-rooms, and plenty of narrow escapes. Cal is scholarly but stubborn, more comfortable in archives and dig sites than in the spotlight, yet repeatedly pushed toward cameras and danger as a reluctant troubleshooter for the papacy.

The series works as a set of linked stand-alone thrillers: each novel tackles its own mystery about relics, apocryphal texts, or prophecies, while slowly building a larger story about reform, secrecy, and how far powerful people will go to shape what the faithful are allowed to know.
