Series background & context

The Rory Yates novels by James Patterson and Andrew Bourelle follow a Texas Ranger whose commitment to law enforcement repeatedly collides with personal loyalties. Rory has worked his way from highway patrol into a demanding role across the ranchlands and cities of his home state. He believes the badge stands for justice, but the cases in these books make that belief difficult to live by. Familiar people and places can complicate an investigation as much as an unknown suspect.

Texas Ranger opens with a crime that destroys the distance between Rory's professional life and his private one. His former wife Anne, a teacher, has been murdered. Returning to his hometown, he finds himself treated as a suspect. His training does not protect him from suspicion, and his relationship with Anne makes it impossible to approach the case as though he were simply another officer assigned to investigate.

Finding the killer means putting his own reputation and freedom at risk.

The first novel combines the murder investigation with the pressures of returning home. Rory has to confront people who know his history, while his feelings about Anne threaten to influence his decisions. The small-town setting matters because his past is close at hand. Relationships, loyalties and judgments about his failed marriage are part of the environment in which he must work. His determination can help him pursue a difficult lead, but it can also make him vulnerable to narrowing his attention too quickly.

In Texas Outlaw, Rory is sent to Rio Lobo, a remote West Texas town. Detective Ariana Delgado has asked for his help because she doubts the supposedly accidental death of a local councilwoman. The police chief is less welcoming, and Rory's presence creates tension before he has established what happened. His investigation uncovers an entanglement of favors, secrets and corruption. He must decide how far he can push the case when the normal channels seem unlikely to deliver the truth.

Rory's relationship with country singer Willow Dawes adds another complication: a song about his bravery has brought him attention he does not especially want. The contrast between a public image of heroism and the practical choices of police work runs alongside the mysteries. These are adult crime thrillers with violence, family concerns and small-town drama. Read Texas Ranger before Texas Outlaw to meet Rory through the case that most directly challenges his personal history, then follow him into a different community where his understanding of justice is tested again.
