Rook & Rose Books in Order

Co-written by Brennan and Alyc Helms under the name M.A. Carrick, Rook & Rose is city fantasy on a generous scale. Its setting, Nadezra, feels dense from the first page, full of neighborhoods, class tensions, old grudges, crime networks, noble houses, and magical traditions that overlap without ever quite aligning. The city is not just where the story happens. It is the thing everything else is orbiting.

The series begins with Ren, a con artist who comes to Nadezra planning to pose as the long-lost daughter of a noble house. That alone would be enough for a good intrigue novel. Brennan and Helms then add pattern magic, vigilantes, colonial strain, debt, family hunger, and two men whose lives become knotted up with hers, Grey Serrado, bruised but stubbornly decent, and Derossi Vargo, charming and far more dangerous than he looks.

Masks are everywhere in these books.

Some are literal, some social, and some magical. Ren is constantly managing identities, but she is hardly the only one. One of the pleasures of the trilogy is watching how public roles, private histories, and political ambitions refuse to stay in separate boxes. A street-level problem can become a noble-house problem in a page or two. A personal lie can turn into civic catastrophe.

Despite the size of the books, the tone is not ponderous. There is plenty of wit, warmth, and sharp character chemistry. At the same time, the series never forgets the uglier structures underneath the glitter. Power in Nadezra is unevenly distributed, and the books care about who gets protected, who gets used, and who gets written out of the official story.

If you like fantasy built around cons, politics, neighborhoods, secret histories, and people reinventing themselves one risky step at a time, Rook & Rose is easy to sink into. Start with The Mask of Mirrors and plan to keep going. The trilogy is designed to reward investment, and the city only gets richer as more of its layers come into view.
