The Wilders books take place in a version of our world where psychic gifts are part of ordinary life, though ordinary is a relative term. Many adults have active powers, social rules have grown up around those powers, and one small part of the population, the wilders, carry something even stranger. Their gifts run broader and deeper, and people are rarely comfortable around them.

Brennan drops that setup into a university story, which turns out to be a very good fit. Welton is a place where psychic sciences are studied, managed, and argued over, so college life and worldbuilding feed each other naturally. Dorms, classes, student groups, awkward friendships, and institutional politics all matter, not just as background, but as the actual fabric of the story.

Kim is the series anchor.

She arrives at Welton in Welcome to Welton and Lies and Prophecy with talent in divination and the ordinary mix of enthusiasm and uncertainty that comes with starting college. Then Julian enters the picture. He is a wilder, and that means he is not just another student but the center of other people's fear, curiosity, and projections. Brennan uses their friendship, and the tensions around it, to explore the difference between what a society says it believes and how it treats the people it marks as dangerous.

The first novel leans into mystery and immediate peril. Kim's visions, Julian's vulnerability, and a growing sense that something unseen is targeting the people around them keep the pace moving. Chains and Memory shifts some of the energy toward rights, law, and social change. The danger is still personal, but the books become more openly interested in institutions, and in how much effort it takes to turn sympathy into justice.

The tone lands somewhere between campus fantasy, urban fantasy, and coming-of-age story. There is magic, but also coursework. There are omens and attacks, but also roommates, cafeterias, and the strange intensity of first-year friendships. That blend gives the series a nice texture. It feels youthful without feeling slight.

If you like stories where the supernatural world is already built into society, rather than hidden behind a curtain, Wilders is worth a look. The stakes are both intimate and structural, which makes the books feel more grounded than their premise might suggest.
