The Roly-Poly Flying Pony books are illustrated comic adventures created by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre. They begin with an excellent question: what would happen if a small, round, biscuit-loving pony fell out of the sky and landed in an ordinary town?

His name is Kevin.

Max, the human boy at the center of the stories, becomes Kevin's friend and reluctant helper. Kevin is a flying pony, but he is not sleek, graceful, or especially good at behaving like a hero. He rolls, snacks, panics, and tends to attract trouble, while Max has to keep up with the consequences.

In The Legend of Kevin, Max meets the strange new visitor from the clouds and gets swept into a mission involving a flooded town. Kevin's Great Escape sends the pair into another rescue-filled muddle. In Kevin and the Biscuit Bandit, Kevin becomes the main suspect when biscuits disappear around Bumbleford, so Max and Kevin must find the real thief. Kevin vs the Unicorns gives Kevin a new set of magical rivals to face.

The books mix short chapters with Sarah McIntyre's energetic illustrations, visual jokes, labels, maps, and bits of apparent chaos. They are built for reading aloud as well as for children beginning to tackle longer independent stories.

Kevin is silly, but the friendship is sincere. Max often has to be practical when everyone else is getting carried away, and the stories make room for kind choices alongside runaway ponies and absurd emergencies.

Start with The Legend of Kevin. The plots are easy to follow on their own, but the first book is the best introduction to Max, Kevin, and the gleefully odd world they share.
