A Rogue in Texas

by Lorraine Heath

Series background & context

Rogues in Texas is a historical romance trilogy that drops three privileged Englishmen into the harsh reality of post–Civil War Texas. Sent away from home as punishment for their reckless ways, they expect a brief exile and instead find back‑breaking labor, strong‑willed women, and a chance to build real lives.

The first book, A Rogue in Texas, follows Grayson Rhodes, the illegitimate son of a duke who has never quite belonged in London society. Shipped across the ocean to prove his worth, he ends up picking cotton for widow Abbie Westland. Grayson arrives soft‑handed and arrogant; the Texas sun, the fields, and Abbie's three children quickly strip away his illusions. What begins as a grudging working arrangement grows into a layered relationship that forces him to choose between returning to his old world and claiming a new one.

In Never Love a Cowboy, Harrison Bainbridge, another exiled nobleman, lands in the rough town of Fortune, Texas. He is a man carrying private wounds from a cold childhood and public disgrace back in England. Jessye Kane, a capable young woman with a painful past of her own, has no patience for the charming stranger underfoot. Their story becomes one of two damaged people learning to trust that they are worth loving, even when the town and their own histories say otherwise.

The final volume, Never Marry a Cowboy, completes the arc with a marriage‑of‑convenience tale that draws together threads from the earlier books. A so‑called ruined woman and a man everyone expects to keep drifting are pushed into wedlock for practical reasons. Life on the Texas frontier, however, has a way of reshaping plans. The story explores disability, gossip, and what it means to be seen as more than your worst moment.

Throughout the series, Heath plays with the contrast between rigid English class structures and the rougher codes of honor in Texas. The "rogues" arrive expecting to coast on birth and charm. They end up learning to plant, harvest, mend fences, and stand alongside neighbors who judge by actions rather than titles.

Rogues in Texas also forms a bridge to the later Daughters of Fortune books, which follow the next generation. Children and connections hinted at here blossom into full stories there. Taken together, the trilogy and its offshoots paint a sweeping picture of families whose roots stretch from London drawing rooms to sun‑baked Texas farms.
